This week we had the pleasure of speaking to local Singer, Musician, Photographer and Artist Lee Thompson. He told us about his music and photography, but we also know that he is a fantastic artist, as Stella proudly displays a piece of his artwork on her living room wall!
1. Tell us a little about what you do, how long have you been doing this and how did you get started?
I am primarily a singer but play guitar as well. I currently front SKA band, The Skatonics. I have been in bands, in my home country of South Africa and the UK, for thirty years and started in a garage with by best mates like almost everyone else.
2. Do you have any influences or role models?
I love singers with great control of their gift. In my opinion this includes the likes of George Michael, Annie Lennox, Sting, Beverley Craven, KT Tunstall and Freddie Mercury. New on the scene with an incredible set of lungs is a guy called Jake Wesley Rogers.
3. What’s your greatest or proudest achievement to date?
Supporting Foreigner on their entire South African tour in 1993 (performing for over 70,000 people). Supporting Madness at House of Fun in Minehead comes a close second.
4. Tell us an interesting fact about yourself/funny story
I jumped into the world of music photography back in 2007 and have snapped many of the world’s leading acts on stage and off. Travelling with a touring band is both a joyous and arduous experience but one of those things that many would love to do.
I’ve had that privilege behind the mic and the lens. My most notable achievement in this area has been having my work appear on three Quireboys albums and on Dexy’s merchandise. See some of it here: ishootstuff.co.uk
5. How can people find out more about what you do?
